How Ex-NHL Star Alex Galchenyuk Went From Signing a Contract to Getting Arrested in 8 Days

Alex Galchenyuk, a former NHL forward who played for seven teams in his career, was arrested on July 9, 2023 in Scottsdale, Arizona, after a hit-and-run incident that involved a parking lot sign, a curb, and another vehicle. He was charged with five misdemeanors: private property hit and run, disorderly conduct, failure to obey, resisting arrest, and threatening or intimidating.

The Scottsdale police recently released the bodycam footage of the arrest, which showed a clearly intoxicated Galchenyuk making multiple threats to the officers and their families, and also uttering racial slurs directed at a black officer. Some of the threats he made included: "You will die in the desert", "I will end your bloodline", and "I will kill you and your family".

Galchenyuk's father, who was in the driver's seat of a white BMW when the police arrived, tried to calm down his son and cooperate with the police, but Galchenyuk refused to comply and continued to be verbally abusive and aggressive. He also claimed that he was not driving the vehicle and that he was a victim of a robbery.

The Arizona Coyotes, who had signed Galchenyuk to a one-year contract on July 1, 2023, terminated his contract immediately after the arrest, citing an "off-ice incident" as the reason. The Coyotes did not offer any further comment on the matter.

Galchenyuk later pleaded guilty to one count of threatening, and had the other charges dismissed in August⁵. He apologized for his "deeply offensive, uncalled for, horrendous, embarrassing, disrespectful, and just plain awful" behavior, and said he was seeking professional help for his personal issues.

Galchenyuk, who was the third overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, is currently playing for SKA St. Petersburg in the Kontinental Hockey League. He has not played in the NHL since the 2021-22 season, when he was with the Nashville Predators. He has scored 136 goals and 197 assists in 597 NHL games.
