A high school teacher in Mesa, Arizona, has been placed on paid administrative leave after allegedly dressing as the devil and telling students to "hail Satan" on Wednesday, October 25, 2023. The teacher, who has not been publicly identified, reportedly wore devil horns and carried a pitchfork, which he waved over students' heads as they entered his classroom. He also greeted them with the phrase "hail Satan", which offended some of the students who are devout Christians.
One of the students, Nathaniel Hamlet, a sophomore at Mesa High School, told 12 News that he repeatedly asked the teacher to stop, but the teacher persisted. Hamlet said he pushed the pitchfork away from his head several times and told the teacher, "Don't do that to me". Hamlet then informed his father, Chris Hamlet, a former Mesa Public School board candidate, who reported the incident to the principal.
Chris Hamlet said he was "livid" because he is also a Christian and felt that the teacher's behavior was inappropriate and disrespectful. He said, "If you're gonna keep the Christian stuff out, then you got to keep the devil-worshipping stuff out". He also said that he thinks the teacher should be fired for his actions.
The Mesa Public Schools district said that they were notified of the alleged incident late Wednesday afternoon and began an investigation on Thursday morning. The district said that they placed the teacher on paid administrative leave pending the result of the investigation, which is still ongoing.
The district did not specify whether the teacher was dressed up in anticipation of Halloween or because it was school spirit week. Some parents told 12 News that they did not agree with what the teacher did, but they did not think he should be fired over it. They said that it could have been a joke or a misunderstanding.
However, Nathaniel Hamlet said that he felt like the teacher was trying to mock his faith and make him uncomfortable. He said, "I feel like that's fair, but he did it repeatedly to everyone. So I feel like he should probably get fired".
Conclusion:
The incident involving a Mesa High School teacher who allegedly dressed as the devil and told students to "hail Satan" has sparked controversy and outrage among some parents and students. The teacher has been placed on paid administrative leave while the district investigates the matter. Some people think the teacher should be fired for his actions, while others think it was a harmless prank or a misunderstanding. The teacher's identity and motive remain unknown.
